{"id":7413,"date":"2021-07-24T15:01:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-24T13:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.incuballiance.fr\/?p=7413"},"modified":"2025-09-08T15:02:44","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T13:02:44","slug":"skymab-laureat-i-lab-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.incuballiance.fr\/en\/skymab-laureat-i-lab-2020","title":{"rendered":"\u00a0Skymab, i-Lab 2020 winner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Skymab Biotherapeutics, a biotechnology company currently incubated at IncubAlliance Paris-Saclay, is among the winners of the 2020 edition of the i-Lab competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leading seed funding program in France, the &quot;i-Lab&quot; National Competition for Supporting the Creation of Innovative Technology Companies, is now a key event for promising startups. Among this year&#039;s winners is Skymab Biotherapeutics, a biotechnology company currently incubated at IncubAlliance Paris-Saclay. We look back on this success story with Aiphi Nguyen, co-founder and CEO of Skymab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To begin, can you introduce Skymab to us in a few words?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skymab is a biotechnology company, a spin-off of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), specializing in the identification, design, engineering, and development of antibodies targeting GPCRs, a large family of therapeutic targets in oncology for therapeutic and diagnostic applications. Specifically, thanks to two patents licensed to us by the CEA, we design and deploy scientific programs to develop biopharmaceuticals for the treatment of solid tumors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why did you choose to apply to the i-Lab competition?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While i-Lab was on the &quot;must-do&quot; list for a young biotech company like ours, I must admit that I hadn&#039;t initially planned to participate this year. The idea started to take root in late 2019, during a meeting with InnoBio, Bpifrance&#039;s investment fund dedicated to companies in the healthcare sector. During this meeting, my contacts explained that i-Lab was considered a good indicator of quality by most investors and that it was therefore in my best interest to participate as soon as possible. Which I decided to do in early 2020, putting in a lot of effort! I dedicated a significant amount of time to it whenever I could, evenings and weekends, for over a month until submitting my application in mid-February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What happened next?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had to wait until March 23rd to learn that I had been selected to pitch during the second week of April. It was a pitch I had worked on extensively, and due to the lockdown, it took place via video conference! In the meantime, I also had to take a kind of test to determine my entrepreneurial profile and an interview with a coach from In Extenso, which, apparently, went well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How did you receive the news of your nomination among the winners\u2026 as well as the award of a grant which is known to generally be between 200,000 and 300,000 euros?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We received the news by email in June. We were, of course, delighted to see our work rewarded and the quality of our project recognized by a jury of leading professionals in the world of innovation. It was a pleasant surprise, even though the feasibility of our program doesn&#039;t depend on obtaining the i-Lab grant. After an initial fundraising round and French Tech Seed certification, which opened doors to various Bpifrance funding opportunities, we now have the necessary resources to launch our program. However, it&#039;s clear that the i-Lab grant will help secure and strengthen our approach, beyond simply providing the company with significant exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can you tell us a little about this program?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It involves positioning our molecule for the preclinical development phase. This is a crucial step, not only scientifically, as it allows us to transform a molecule into a therapeutic candidate eligible for drug development, but also from the perspective of our financial roadmap. By strengthening our credibility with investors thanks to this initial success, it increases our chances of raising funds from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What role does IncubAlliance play alongside you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A facilitator role. When creating an innovative company, the sheer number of existing support mechanisms and procedures is so vast that it&#039;s easy to get lost. In this complex ecosystem, IncubAlliance&#039;s advisors provide invaluable guidance and greatly facilitate networking. By offering an external perspective on our project, they allow us to gain distance from our work, confirm certain structures and directions, and help us adjust others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In short, what advice would you give to future candidates for the i-Lab competition?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would tell them that every detail counts and that no step should be overlooked, neither the substantial thirty-page report they have to write nor the thirty-minute pitch they&#039;re expected to deliver. For my part, I really defended my project by approaching each step like a legal argument: I told myself that with every sentence, every figure, every diagram, I not only had to tell a story, but that each one had to contribute to supporting the robustness and quality of the project! In short, you have to work hard\u2026 and cross your fingers for a bit of luck! Ce que j\u2019ai d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de faire d\u00e9but 2020, en d\u00e9ployant beaucoup d\u2019efforts&nbsp;! Retour sur un succ\u00e8s avec Aiphi Nguyen, cofondatrice et CEO de Skymab. Pour commencer, pouvez-vous nous pr\u00e9senter Skymab en quelques mots&nbsp;? Skymab est une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de biotechnologie, \u00ab&nbsp;spinoff&nbsp;\u00bb du Commissariat \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9nergie atomique et aux \u00e9nergies alternatives (CEA) dont le m\u00e9tier est la recherche de cibles, le design, l\u2019ing\u00e9nierie et le d\u00e9veloppement d\u2019anticorps dirig\u00e9s contre les RCPG, une grande famille de cibles th\u00e9rapeutiques dans le domaine de l\u2019oncologie pour des applications th\u00e9rapeutiques et diagnostics. Concr\u00e8tement, gr\u00e2ce aux deux brevets dont le CEA nous conc\u00e8de la licence, nous concevons et d\u00e9ployons des programmes scientifiques en vue de d\u00e9velopper des bio-m\u00e9dicaments pour le traitement de tumeurs solides. Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de canditater au concours i-Lab&nbsp;? Si i-Lab faisait partie du paysage des \u00ab&nbsp;choses \u00e0 faire&nbsp;\u00bb pour une jeune biotech comme la n\u00f4tre, je dois avouer qu\u2019initialement je n\u2019avais pas pr\u00e9vu d\u2019y participer cette ann\u00e9e. L\u2019id\u00e9e a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 faire son chemin fin 2019, lors d\u2019un rendez-vous avec InnoBio, le fond d\u2019investissement de Bpifrance d\u00e9di\u00e9 aux entreprises du secteur de la sant\u00e9. Dans le cadre de cet entretien, mes interlocuteurs m\u2019ont expliqu\u00e9 qu\u2019i-Lab \u00e9tait consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme un bon indicateur de qualit\u00e9 par la plupart des investisseurs et que j\u2019avais donc tout int\u00e9r\u00eat \u00e0 y participer au plus vite. Ce que j\u2019ai d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de faire d\u00e9but 2020, en d\u00e9ployant beaucoup d\u2019efforts&nbsp;! J\u2019y ai en effet consacr\u00e9 \u00e9norm\u00e9ment de temps d\u00e8s que je le pouvais, soir et week-end, pendant plus d\u2019un mois jusqu\u2019au moment de remettre mon dossier mi f\u00e9vrier. Que s\u2019est-il pass\u00e9 ensuite&nbsp;? J\u2019ai d\u00fb attendre jusqu\u2019au 23 mars pour apprendre que j\u2019\u00e9tais s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9e pour pitcher la deuxi\u00e8me semaine d\u2019avril. Un pitch que j\u2019ai une nouvelle fois \u00e9norm\u00e9ment travaill\u00e9 et qui, confinement oblige, a eu lieu en visio&nbsp;! Entre temps, j\u2019ai aussi d\u00fb passer une sorte de test pour d\u00e9terminer mon profil d\u2019entrepreneur et un entretien avec un coach d\u2019In Extenso qui, a priori, se sont bien pass\u00e9s. Comment avez-vous re\u00e7u la nouvelle de votre nomination parmi les laur\u00e9ats\u2026 ainsi que de l\u2019obtention d\u2019une subvention dont on sait qu\u2019elle se situe en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral entre 200 et 300 000 euros&nbsp;? Nous l\u2019avons apprise par mail courant juin. Nous nous sommes bien s\u00fbr r\u00e9jouis de voir notre travail r\u00e9compens\u00e9 et la qualit\u00e9 de notre projet reconnu par un jury de professionnels r\u00e9f\u00e9rents dans le monde de l\u2019innovation. Cela a donc \u00e9t\u00e9 une bonne surprise, m\u00eame si, la faisabilit\u00e9 de notre programme ne repose pas sur l\u2019obtention de la subvention i-Lab.
